Index of Latin names of taxa of algae noted in Poland

The index of Latin names of algal taxa which are given in the literature concerning Poland up to the year 1990, is elaborated in the Phycological Department of the W. Szafer Institute of Botany of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Cracow. It is accomplished at the suggestion of Dr. K. Wolowski, and with his aid, according to the arrangement planned by Professor J. Sieminska taking advantage of the data collected under her supervision since 1958 (initiated as recently as in 1954 by Professor K. Starmach).

The index is intended to serve as the base for the critical taxonomic and floristic works, and for the elaboration of monographs of particular groups of algae: marine, freshwater and aerophytic, occurring in Poland. It also may be helpful at the synthetic elaborating of recent and fossil floras of individual regions, countries and continents. One can make use of it, too, when searching for the literature to the rare or critical species, and for recognizing the cosmopolitic ones. It can also be suitable at the study of the geographical distribution of species, and in the international program "Global Change".

The present index of the Latin names of taxa contains information about prokaryotic and eukaryotic algae given in the literature published up to the year 1990 of the broadly planned basis, taking into account also other procariotic and eucariotic algae.

The Latin names of the genera and species are given in the alphabetic order. Latin names of the lower systematic units are placed below, also alphabetically, irrespective of their rank. The letter and grammatical errors were, as far as possible, corrected.

The author (or the authors) names at the Latin names of  taxa are ommited here because of the fact that they differ very often and sometimes they concern different taxa. The users have to search for information on the particular taxon under its present name and its synonyms.

Information about taxa noted in Poland up to 1990 you can get pointing to the first letter of the genus name. Detailed bibliographic information about taxa you can get pointing either the whole name of the taxon or writing directly the name of the taxon in the suitable field.

At the bibliographic items the symbols of the type of information is given (in parentheses): upon drawings and photos, i.e. illustrations - (i), upon the complementary remarks concerning size or morphology - (u), and on the new taxon description - (n).

The completion of the index in the following years is foreseen. The database will be supplemented after making up the bibliography of the subsequent years.

The program was made with the financial aid of the State Committee for Scientific Research under the number P-000325834-38000000-55-1-7771-35007.
