Herbarium |
Curator: Prof. Dr. LEON STUCHLIK
The Herbarium of the Institute is divided into four sections:
1. Vascular Plants (KRAM)
l Staff: Prof. Dr. Zbigniew Mirek (curator), Ms. Danuta Cyganek and Ms. Beata Nęcka
(technical support staff)
l Number of sheets: 454.000 (including herbarium of B. Pawłowski 30.000 and J. Mądalski
40.000). Reach collections of plants from Europe and Asia by Prof. A. Jasiewicz (about
50.000) and from Central Europe by several other botanists (over 70.000) are still awaiting
incorporation to the main herbarium. Thus, the herbarium contains about 560.000 vascular
plants altogether
l Geographical area: world-wide collection with emphasis on holarctic plants and mountain
flora of Europe
l Important collections: several hundred of types; A. Andrzejowski (Ukraine), E. Janczewski
(Ribes, plants of Wolhynia), B. Kotula (Carpathian Mts, Tirolian Alps - over 25.000),
A. Jasiewicz (Balcan Peninsula, Mexico, China, Carpathian Mts), L. Stuchlik (Cuba),
B. Pawłowski (Carpathian Mts, Balkan Peninsula, many types of Alchemilla), T. Wilczyński
(about 10.000 from Podolia and Wolhynia), A. Śleńdziński (Pokutia), J. Mądalski,
A. Rehman, W. Szafer, F. Karo, E. Wołoszczak, H. Zapałowicz, A. Żmuda. There are also
housed herbaria of historical value: J. Gilibert (18th century), J. Jundziłł (18th century) and
S. Udziela (19/20th century)
l Types: about 700
l Loan: to recognized botanical institutions
l Exchange: available - plants from Poland, wanted - plants from different regions of the world (especially mountain plants from Europe and Asia). Specimens are exchanged with 30 institutions in Poland and 74 institutions abroad.
l Curator procedure: plants in the herbarium are glued to sheets of paper bound together and stored in metal cabinets. The herbarium is organized according to the Durand system
l Exsiccata: a) Flora Poloniae Exsiccata (vascular plants), in 195?-1998 eight “centurias”
(no. 1-800) containing vascular plant species from various regions of Poland
b) Plantae Vasculares Svalbardenses Exsiccatae
2. Bryophytes (KRAM-B)
Staff: Dr HALINA BEDNAREK-OCHYRA, M. Sc. (curator), Mrs KATARZYNA BIŁYK (née Noga) (technician assistant).
The herbarium of bryophytes is located in the main herbarium room. All specimens are numbered. Until 1976 the collections of bryophytes consisted only of 25,000 specimens. Over the past 15 years the collection has increased five times and contains 144,000 specimens. A rich collection of the African mosses collected by Prof. S. Lisowski (12,000 specimens) and herbarium of mosses of northern Poland collected by Doc. Dr. L. Olesiński (5,000 specimens) are still awaiting for incorporation into the bryophyte herbarium.
The herbarium is organized systematically – liverworts are arranged according to the Schuster system, and mosses according to the Fleischer-Brotherus system. The specimens are stored in paper bags that are loosely stored in cardboard folders. A geographic key is used for the most numerous species. Although the herbarium consists of collections from the entire world, the African, Antarctic, and Australian collections of mosses are primarily emphasized. About 2000 type collections are stored in the herbarium, and they one being catalogued.
The herbarium contains many important exsiccata collections, both historical (L. Rabenhorst, E. Bauer) as well as contemporary. Specimens are exchanged with more than 70 institutions and private parties.
Four editorial series, both of the domestic and introduced bryophytes, are published by the Herbarium of Bryophytes:
a) Musci Poloniae Exsiccati (R. Ochyra, H. Bednarek-Ochyra) – published in fascicles consisting of 100 specimens; in 1978–1993 twelve centurias (No. 1–1200) containing species and varieties of mosses from various regions of Poland were distributed.
b) Bryophyta Antarctica Exsiccata (R. Ochyra) – published in 1984, containing 200 mosses and liverworts from the Southern Shetland Islands. These are the first and so far the only exsiccata of the Antarctic bryophytes.
c) Bryophyta Svalbardensia Exsiccata (H. Bednarek-Ochyra, B. Godzik, K. Grodzińska) – published in 1988 contains four fascicles (No. 1–80) of mosses and liverworts of the Hornsund region. These are the first exsiccati editions on the Arctic mosses in Europe.
d) Bryophyta Africana Selecta (R. Ochyra, T. Pocs) – has been published in a series of 25 issues. The first 8 series were published in 1992–93, and more series are in preparation. These are the first exsiccata covering the African continent south of the Sahara.
3. Fungi (KRAM-F)
Employees: dr ANDRZEJ CHLEBICKI (curator), Ms. Barbara Pleban, M. Sc. (technical support staff).
The fungal specimens are stored in paper bags that are placed on sheets of paper, tied in fascicles and stored in specially designed wooden boxes. The herbarium contains about 50,000 specimens.
4. Lichens (KRAM-L)
Employees: Dr. URSZULA BIELCZYK (curator), Ms. BOŻENA JĘDRYCHOWSKA (technical support staff).
At present the collection contains 47.060 labelled specimens of lichens, including 150 types. The major part of the collection are lichens from S. Poland, especially from the Carpathian Mountains. Taxonomically, the species from the families Verrucariaceae, Physciaceae and Buelliaceae are the most important collection. The Herbarium exchanges specimens of lichens with 50 institutions in the world. The Lichen Herbarium publishes a series “Lichenes Poloniae Meridionalis Exsiccati”. So far 20 fascicles have been issued with 250 numbers of lichens. The collection is housed in the main herbarium hall in the Institute of Botany. The specimens are filed in alphabetical order of genera and kept in paper envelopes filed vertically in card-board boxes. Exsiccatae are a separate collection. These are as follows: Arnold F. C. G. Lichenes Exsiccati, Fałtynowicz W. & Miądlikowska J. Lichenes Poloniae Exsiccati, Flora Exsiccata Austro-Hungarica, Flora Hungarica Exsiccata, Flora Romaniae Exsiccata, Fóriss F.
