Polish Red Data Book of Plants

The Polish Red Data Book of Plants (664 pp. in Polish with English summaries, 169 colour photos) covers pteridophytes and flowering plants which are either extinct or threatened with extinction – nearly 15% of the vascular flora in Poland. The text of the Book is supplemented with maps showing the range of a given taxon in Europe and the distribution of its localities in Poand. The book provides descriptions of 296 taxa (species or subspecies). It covers 38 extinct species (31 have been classified among the extinct category - EX and 7 extinct in the wild – EW). Among these species there is an endemic Cochlearia polonica, which has survived at some newly created stations. The number of critically endangered (CR) species (74) is high in Poland. These are plants with isolated, often relic localities, such as Saxifraga nivalis. Among the endangered category (EN) 59 taxa (eg. Rubus chamaemorus and Orchis ustulata) have been classified; among vulnerable (VU) – 102 spp., 21 spp. have been assigned to the lower risk category (LR), and 2 to the data deficient category (DD).
